Gary A. Thompson is Principal for GA Thompson Consulting, LLC with over 28 years of pharmaceutical experience in Clinical Pharmacology and strategic Drug Development.
Dr. Thompson received a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and a Ph.D. in Pharmacokinetics/Biopharmaceutics from the University of Cincinnati. He has a broad range of interest including the practical implementation of theoretical pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic principles and
mathematical modeling to improve the overall drug development process as well as the theoretical assessments of fundamental assumptions underlying methods used in the analysis and interpretation of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic data. He has published over 100 journal articles, book chapters and abstracts in the area of Clinical Pharmacology and Drug Development.
Following graduation, he joined the Department of Drug Metabolism at Merrell-Dow Research Institute as a Pharmacokineticist in 1983. In 1992 he moved to the Department of Experimental Medicine at Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals where he was instrumental in the development of the Pharmacokinetics Department and responsible for the mentoring of emerging scientists. In 2009, Dr. Thompson retired from Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals as a Research Fellow and founded GA Thompson Consulting, LLC focusing on the strategic application of Clinical Pharmacology to drug development.
In addition to his contributions to the pharmaceutical industry, Dr. Thompson has served in academia as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Pharmacokinetics at the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy and as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Clinical Anesthesia Research at the University of Cincinnati Medical School. These affiliations have also provided opportunities to further his mentoring of scientists while serving on Research and Dissertation Committees.
Dr. Thompson joined AAPS in 1986 and has since been actively involved, currently serving as Member at Large on the Executive Committee. He has also served in other leadership roles including Secretary/Treasurer, Vice-chair, Chair-elect, Chair, and Past-chair for the PPDM Section and on other AAPS Committees including Chair of the PPDM Abstract Screening Committee, Member of the Annual Programing Committee and an Executive Committee Representative to various Sections including CPTR, DDD, MSE and RS. He is a founding member of the Indiana/Ohio Discussion Group of AAPS and the Midwest Users Forum for Population Approaches in Data Analysis.
In addition to his service within AAPS, Dr. Thompson is also a member of other organizations including AAAS, ACCP, ASCPT, APhA, OPA and ISSX and has served on various committees including the Education Committee for ASCPT and as a Member and Secretary of the Clinical Pharmacology Technical Group of PhRMA.
Dr. Thompson has also contributed to the scientific development within the area of Clinical Pharmacology as recognized by his election to Rho Chi Pharmaceutical Honor Society, being the recipient of a Clinical Pharmacology Fellowship to study at the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology in Bobenheim am Berg, Germany, and ultimately being elected a Fellow of both AAPS and the American College of Clinical Pharmacology. He has served over the past 25 years as a reviewer for various Pharmaceutics and Clinical Pharmacology journals and as a member of the Editorial Board for Biopharmaceutics and Drug Disposition.
